Proposition 30 Would Help Restore Funding for Education
Prop 30 is primarily a tax on the wealthiest Californians. It raises funds by 1) temporarily increasing the personal income tax on earners of more than $250,000 ($500,000 for joint filers) by 1-3% for 7 years and 2) temporarily increasing the sales tax by 1/4 of a a cent for 4 years. 85% of new income comes in the form of the progressive tax on the wealthy; 15% comes from the regressive sales tax. Why are new revenues needed? $20 billion in public funding reductions over the past few years have devastated public education and social services. Locally, Cabrillo has already cut about 1 in 8 dollars.
What happens if Prop 30 fails?
Without Prop 30, some $6 billion in trigger cuts will kick in statewide. Cabrillo would be forced to cut an additional 7.3% of its budget.
