Our flex week was very productive and mostly in-person! Beginning with the in-person lunch with guest speaker Jeff Freitas, President of California Federation of Teachers (CFT). The hugely popular lunch was part of the CFT “Back To School” tour. Freitas encouraged faculty to share the biggest challenges they currently face as educators. The most prominent issue is the housing crisis, particularly for early career educators that can’t afford to live in Santa Cruz county.
The hybrid Council meeting followed the lunch and delved deeper into union issues, including: CCFT budget details and negotiations. The Associate Faculty Solidarity gathering supported our part-time faculty with relevant and immediate issues. Led by faculty, Rachel Mitchell & John Govsky, the Zoom meeting covered Associate faculty health care changes, equal pay for equal work, and much more.
