The Cabrillo College Reading Center is a warm, friendly, learning environment where students can build their skills and confidence, as well as get help with difficult reading assignments. In 2012, only 54% of the students who were assessed at Cabrillo placed at the college–level in their reading skills. Reading strategies are not traditionally taught after the fourth grade, thus many students slip through the cracks of the K-12 system without mastering basic comprehension skills. Although none of Cabrillo’s Reading courses are required, the Reading Center offers one unit, individualized reading lab and vocabulary courses to support struggling students.

These self-paced, individualized courses target specific reading skills for improvement. For each unit of enrollment, students spend 30 hours on a personalized learning program. Students of all abilities can participate. Individual reading courses include:two students reading

Reading 206—Individualized Reading
Reading 206SL—Individualized Reading (recommended for ESL students)

Reading speed, comprehension, vocabulary and study skills are evaluated through a reading assessment during the first week of the class. Coursework is then designed to help students focus on areas needing improvement. Students work at their own pace using books, DVDs and reading software to complete lessons based on their skill level and learning style. Drop-in hours allow students to fit course time into their schedules.

In addition to credit lab courses, the Reading Center offers drop-in tutoring for students wanting help on challenging homework assignments. Struggling with reading skills as an adult can be a painful and shameful experience. The Reading Center, with its bean-bag chairs, holiday decorations, candy bowl, and exceptionally sensitive staff and tutors, provides a safe, positive place on campus for students at all reading levels to build their academic skills.
